History
Originally named the 'Hausten' because of its construction in the autumn of 1917, this ship has had a rich and adventurous history. Designed by Norwegian naval architect Ola Nerhus, a descendant of a family of shipwrights, she initially served as a cargo ship transporting timber and fish between Oslo and Trondheim. Later, in 1926, it became part of the 'Concord' company for the transport of canned goods.
Later it was used as a supply ship for isolated villages along the fjords, also experiencing a clandestine phase during prohibition in Norway in the 1920s, when it was used to smuggle alcohol. She was intercepted with 4000 litres of the forbidden drink, earning her the nickname 'boat of thirst'.
After changing hands several times, it was converted into a sailing school boat in the early 2000s, with numerous modifications for safety, but without compromising its original appearance.
Purchased in 2023 by the current captain, Arnaud Trambouze, the now 100-year-old ship initially sailed the North Sea, before embarking on her first major voyage at the end of 2024-from Oslo to Palermo-demonstrating once again her extraordinary robustness and seaworthiness.
Upon arrival in Sicily, the new captain renamed the boat Sant’Agata, in homage to the patron saint of sailors who was born in Sicily, thus continuing its incredible history through the centuries.
Today, the Sant'Agata is ready to offer unique experiences in partnership with Hotel Kalura, where guests can experience the magic of the sea aboard this historic vessel.
