The Etna chestnut honey from the Etna Volcano range is dark, intense and full of character. It is produced on the slopes of the volcano, where chestnut woods grow on lava soil.
The honey is produced in the area of Zafferana Etnea, the historic heart of Sicilian beekeeping. Here, the lava soils give the local produce unique and distinctive characteristics. This is why the honey from this area has always been known as “the Gold of Etna”.
It is the result of the patient work of the ‘lapari’, the Sicilian beekeepers. They are the guardians of a tradition that began in the early decades of the 20th century, and which still today combines knowledge, respect for nature and the local culture.
The chestnut tree is one of the plants typically found on the slopes of Mount Etna. Its honey is a dark amber colour and has a woody aroma. It is not very sweet, with a slightly bitter note that makes it unmistakable.
It pairs perfectly with mature cheeses, such as pecorino and caciocavallo. It’s also excellent on crêpes, with ricotta and in rustic desserts. Those who enjoy strong flavours also enjoy it on wholemeal bread.
